With the long awaited announcement and initial preview of Windows 8 being released earlier this year, there came a wave of announcements that the next generation of tablets will indeed be running Windows 8 as soon as it is released in late 2012. The most surprising of these is Nokia, who has not yet ventured into the tablet market. The release of a Nokia Windows 8 Tablet just may be Nokia and Windows chance to take the Smart-Device world by storm and conquer valuable market share long held by the infamous tech-warrior crowd stringently devoted to Apple.
While we currently have few details on the yet to be released tablet, Nokia’s lead developer, Marko Ahtisaari, has indicated that it is in the works and that it will likely be ready for retail before the 2012 Christmas shopping season.
In a surprising move revealed march 8, Nokia filed a form with the U.S. Securities and Exchange commission that indicated it currently feels threatened by “adjacent products” outside of the Smartphone world (like tablets) that are increasingly binding themselves to single vendor systems for cross platform devices.
“If our competitors succeed in capturing markets where we are not currently present, this could erode our competitive position,” Nokia said in the form.
While this certainly reveals an embarrassing lack of flexibility and responsibility within the ranks of Nokia’s top brass, it also indicates that Nokia themselves may increasingly be willing to bind into a single vendor (Microsoft), given their past collaborations on Windows Smartphones and their stated determination on getting into the tablet market.
Just this year Nokia has established itself as the gatekeeper of devices running Windows, releasing three different Smartphones at three different price points. Whether Nokia will ride this partnership into 2013 and beyond with Windows 8 is yet to be seen, but given Nokia’s diminishing market share in the Smart-Device market, it’s starting to look more and more likely.
Are tablets the future of portable electronic devices?
Smartphones don’t have adequate storage capabilities or typing functionality, laptops are often bulkier than they need to be and are not designed for on-the-go texting and call making. This leaves a cozy compartment right in the middle of our portable electronic needs that has yet to be filled and could be end up being the next big thing.
Could the Nokia Windows 8 Tablet, a virgin in the tablet market, end up breaking new ground and filling that void?
Many people think so.
“This is Nokia’s chance” wrote one Tech Blogger, “Do something big. Innovate and take risks and you can break the loyalty so many people have to the overrated iPad.”
Going big or going home
Nokia is investing a lot in Windows bring able to remain competitive and compel users to migrate over to Windows 8 instead of its Android and Apple counterparts. While the Nokia Windows 8 tablet doesn’t have to try to be an all-in-one juggernaut like some Samsonite micro suitcase scooter with Swiss Army Knife compartment, it does have to do something imaginative or face losing trust among the tech worlds more avid and influential torch carriers. Let’s hope Nokia can deliver.
